    En la comunicación de masas intervienen los elementos mencionados en el proceso de comunicación: emisor-mensaje-canal-retroalimentación y ruido. Se diferencia con la comunicación artificial como canal transmisor del mensaje. El proceso de comunicación masiva define y ubica los roles categóricos del comunicador y del receptor; reduce o elimina a dimensión de las relaciones interpersonales en el proceso de comunicación y tiende a separar a los individuos de su entorno sociocultural tradicional. El emisor o fuente en el proceso de comunicación masiva suele estar bien identificado, ya que es posible conocer a quien emite, codifica o envía el mensaje; en cambio, el receptor o audiencia, según la teoría clásica, es anónimo, heterogéneo, disperso geográficamente y pasivo, ya que no tiene capacidad de retroalimentación.

    Lenguaje y lengua:
    «Tomado en su conjunto, el lenguaje es multiforme y heteróclito; a caballo en diferentes dominios, a la vez físico, fisiológico y psíquico, pertenece además al dominio individual y al dominio social; no se deja clasificar en ninguna de las categorías de los hechos humanos, porque no se sabe cómo desembrollar su unidad» (Curso de lingüística general). Según esta afirmación de Saussurre, podemos evidenciar que el lenguaje presenta caras muy heterogéneas, definiéndose también como la facultad natural que tiene el ser humano para comunicarse entre sus iguales. Es por esto, que el lenguaje es el objeto de estudio de la lingüística, pero también de otras ciencias como lo son la psicología, antropología, filología entre otras. Sin embargo, lo que las diferencia es que cada uno de ellas lo hace desde una perspectiva determinada.
    Pero si volvemos a la afirmación de Sassurre y las tantas caras que presentan el lenguaje, cabria preguntarnos ¿Cuál de todas ellas es la que presenta utilidad para la lingüística? Sin lugar a dudas la respuesta esta en la lengua. Es decir, que es la facultad de constituir un sistema de signos distintos que corresponden a ideas distintas. En suma, aprendido y compartido por todos los hablantes, permitiéndoles comunicarse entre si y poseyendo un carácter pasivo, inmaterial y por lo tanto social. Es en sus palabras, «norma de todas las manifestaciones del lenguaje» (op. cit.), el componente esencial del lenguaje.
